As with all art for Final Fantasy XI, the piece was drawn by old-hand Amano, and will be used on both Windows and Playstation 2 copies of Chains of Promathia in all areas of release.
The artwork shows a two people. The towering figure in the background is the imprisoned deity, Promathia, while the child in front of him is only refered to as 'The Enigmatic Youth' on Square Enix's Official Site. He's described as "A boy of few words, who frequently appears out of nowhere before adventurers...". What part he'll play in the game is so far unknown...
Born in 1952, Yoshitaka Amano has worked within numerous areas of media, including television, magazine design, comic book illustration and printing. In 1987 he began work on Square's Final Fantasy series, and has continued to supply artwork for nearly all of the games since. Artwork for Final Fantasy XI is his latest contribution to the Final Fantasy name.
