After its initial announcement no more news on the project was given and it wasn’t long before rumors began circulating that the project had probably been scrapped. It wasn’t until October 21st, nearly a year after it was first announced, that Square Enix finally released the game’s first screenshots. Fans were pleasantly surprised to find that the game would not be mere a port but a complete remake making use of the DS’s technological capabilities to the fullest with updated 3D graphics and a revamped battle system that would cater more to modern gamers’ tastes.
Hiromichi Tanaka, the executive producer for Final Fantasy III DS and formerly a director on the Final Fantasy XI team, revealed in an interview with Famitsu that the DS touch screen capabilities will be incorporated into the remake. Gamers will be given the option, if they so wish, to play the entire game using the touch screen. Also, the characters and the storyline of the game will also be expanded upon. In the original NES version, gamers played as four nameless Onion Kids with identical sprites. In this new version, each character will be given their own design and fully developed unique identities and backstories that will now play a significant role in the story. As for the battle system, all that has been revealed thus far is that some of the job classes being now more useful lending to a more balanced job system.
No Japanese release date has been announced yet nor the possibility of it being released across the Pacific. For now we can only keep our fingers crossed and await further developments.
