Requiem

Screenshot Upon entering the cheerless village, Galuf reminds everyone of the whereabouts of the Valley of the Dragons. Try as you might, you can’t locate anyone, or enter any of the doors. What evil is at work here? There is one door that is not barred to you - the doorway of the arched house in the northern part of the town. However, this dwelling also has a locked door further inside. When you try to exit this arched house, an ominous voice calls out to halt you. You are then surrounded by werewolves! (Bartz is reminded of Karnak Castle, as I’m sure you are as well, no doubt).

After some hasty reassurance by Galuf, another wolf of some noble breadth and stature enters. Kelga is his name, and he apparently knows Galuf. Galuf reminds the aged wolf that he is indeed one of the four Dawn Warriors (from Galuf’s flashbacks). Kelga is put at ease with Galuf’s tale, but upon hearing of Bart’s home world he becomes enraged! He comes to the wild conclusion that Bartz and company has in fact aided the release of X-Death, and have come only to laugh at the misfortune of this planet. He throws Galuf aside (!), and demands to challenge a very bewildered Bartz. Reina and Faris try to come to Bartz’s aid, but he wants to fight alone. Kelga launches his super attack right away: Pine Attack! (?) Kelga becomes a blur of motion, spinning round Bartz like some annoying gnat. After getting hit a few times, Bartz concentrates and then sees through the wolf’s attack. He pounces on Kelga, and then gets a reprimand from Galuf. Apparently, Kelga is pretty old and frail, and Bartz hurt him with just the one hit.

Later on, the party is standing around the now bedridden Kelga-san. He pronounces his admiration for Bartz’s ability to see past his Pine Attack. Bartz shrugs it off, and says that his father taught it to him. Kelga nods, and asks for the name of the wise father. Bartz tells them it is indeed Drogan. Both Galuf and Kelga are shocked! Apparently, Drogan was also a Dawn Warrior - something we might have guessed - along with Galuf and Kelga, and this other guy named Zeza.

Bartz is a bit taken aback to find out that he is half alien. The events being climactic, Square, in its wisdom, throws in a flashback for good measure: The Dawn Warriors and the fallen X-Death are in some cave. After deciding that X-Death must be immortal, they deem it fitting to seal him up there. Drogan, however, is against this plot to leave such a dangerous menace on an alien world. Hastily, because X-Death seems to be reviving, Zeza tries convincing Drogan that they don’t have a choice (as is always the case in fantasy epics - choices are limited to those that will ensure the progress of the story). Drogan is still reluctant to co-operate, but Galuf screams at him 'We need your power! We need the power of ALL the Crystals!!.' Drogan concedes...and the Dawn Warriors seal X-Death with the power of the four Crystals. After, Drogan chooses to stay on the alien world to watch over the sealed X-Death.

When the flashback has ended, Kelga asks about Drogan. Bartz tells him of the tale that we witnesses in Rikk’s Village. Kelga is saddened by this news of a friend’s demise, and thus orders the North Gate to be opened along with all of the doors to the shops and other domiciles. You may now wander about and learn a few things from the villagers.

You hear the same miserable story of X-Death’s cruelty, and you also catch tales of the extinction of the dragons, but nothing concrete. Something random about a weapon sold here is that the Crossbow occasionally causes instant death. One wolf tells you the name of the brave soul at Karnak Castle: Tuss. Rest well Tuss, your light shines for us when we think all may be lost - the fire of your courage burns bright!

You can get some vittles from the wolf sitting in the upper portion of the Inn. If you sit in the chair on the left side of the table he will fix you up. The vittles will fully restore you, and what’s more, he gives you eight Tonics for 'dessert.' You can do this three times for a total of 24 Tonics. There are some wolves in the upper right corner of the town, and they will teach an extremely useful melody to you: The Requiem! This powerful song deals tremendous damage to undead creatures - it will come in handy very soon, and will be of use much later in the game.

Lastly, go and visit the well in the lower left portion of the town. Talk to the well; 'Frog... frog.' and an old man pops out. Talk to him, and he will demand that you deliver unto him a frog. What in world is he talking about? Well, fret not children! All you have to do is go outside - preferably to the south (where you came from) - and look for a monster out here that looks like a frog and capture it with !Catch, the Trainer’s 2nd slot default ability. In order to capture an enemy you have to whittle their HP down to about a tenth of the maximum, and then use !Catch to capture the monster. Sort of like Pokemon (shudder). This would be fine if every blow you deal doesn’t kill the poor monster outright. There are ways to make weak blows though...use weaker weapons (never sell anything in Final Fantasy), or use weaker classes What makes this extra hard is that the frog shaped monster, a Kornago in this case, likes to run after the first round of battle if it is injured at all! So you have to hit it and then pretty much capture it right after that. What worked for me was a level 31 Ninja with a Moonring and Mage Slasher. There are many ways to do this, so don’t fret trying to follow my lead exactly.

Once you capture it (make sure not to release it) take it back to the old man, and he will sell you the Kornago’s Gourd for the frog and 10,000G. This useful trinket will allow the capturing of monsters to go much smoother for you now, only demanding that you have to whittle their life force down by half. Make sure that you equip it on your Trainer first though. Apparently, the old man wanted to eat the poor frog.

When you are ready, take a quick break from the game and do some fishing. Afterwards, head north through the North Gate, and proceed to enter the Valley of the Dragons!
